  • Review the Heart Rhythm Society guidelines for the management of cardiac implantable electronic devices in patients nearing end of life or requesting withdrawal of therapy.
  • Discuss the process of cardiac implantable electronic device deactivation.
  • Identify factors to consider, triggers to identify and benefits associated with referral to palliative care.
  • Review eligibility criteria for heart failure patients for hospice care.
  • Review the National Consensus Project Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care as they pertain to heart failure.
  • Discuss early integration of palliative care.  Examine the role of the palliative care team in heart failure management.
  • Discuss barriers to and opportunities for palliative care referrals.
